Ted Coney: Artist in Residence

Local artist, Ted Coney will be Artist in Residence in Ely’s historic courthouse during the Isle of Ely Festival on Saturday 15th June and Sunday 16th June from 11am – 4pm on each day.

He will be working on his latest painting about his family, ‘Who Stole The Toothpaste?’, using drawings made in the main courtroom and cells last year as part of his research.

It is reputed that E.H. Shepard was inspired by the courtroom for his illustratios in ‘The Wind In The Willows’ which showed Toad’s downfall and punishment. Ted is also using images of Toad in his oil painting as a symbol of pomposity and greed. Ted’s ancestors made and lost a fortune in the pharmaceutical business over a hundred years ago, hence the title of his painting.

Come and see Ted’s work in progress and also enjoy a rare glimpse into the interior of this historic building. Admittance is free.
