Stories Behind The Painting

I just been reading ‘Girl in the Green Gown ‘ again. It’s about a painting by Van Eyck which shows a double portrait, reputedly of Arnolfini and his wife. It was painted in 1434 and was bought by the National Gallery in 1843 and has remained there every since.

Author, Carola Hicks has divided the book  into alternate chapters exploring what happened to the painting between these dates  and systematically going through each object in the painting and explaining their symbolism and meanings.
