Letter: We have fought long and hard
As a trustee of Babylon Arts I have been around long enough to remember when the Tory-led district council took away core funding (vital money for day-to-day running costs) from this arts charity.
Over the last 12 years or so, varipus directors of Babylon Arts have fought long and hard, often to the detriment of their own health and welfare, to bring an exciting programme to Ely’s riverside and beyond.
Visitors are often surprised that the gallery isn’t council funded but it is now time that it should be, at least in part.
East Cambridgeshire Distric Council say that the gallery is now the responsibility of Ely City Council, who say they have little funding.
Isn’t it time these two institutions got together to work out how to save this valuable community asset before it is too late?
The City Council’s tourist slogan is currently ‘Ely – where medieval meets modern’.
Without the Babylon Gallery, I fear the modern part will be sadly missing.
