LETTER: Debate over future of Ely’s high street

A two-year scheme has been announced in East Cambridgeshire that will see discretionary Business Rate Relief for shops with a rateable value below £51,000. But some residents think it’s too little too late…

I was very interested to read in last week’s Ely Standard your article about East Cambridgeshire District Council’s interest in tourism titled ‘tourism set for big boost’.

Could this be the same council who last year gave away their tourist office to City of Ely Council?

It would seem a huge waste of public money if ECDC were to bring in ‘experts’ to develop their strategy on tourism and not leave it to the very experienced staff at Cromwell House who have already been doing an excellent job for many years.

If there is any money earmarked for this work then it is hoped that the city council will benefit, to broaden the reach over the district.

It is already widely accepted that Ely is seen as the hub of East Cambridgeshire and it would be a pity if both councils were to duplicate their offerings.
