Direct Observation
I was intrigued by a collection of miniature figures on display at the Fitzwilliam Museum which were replicas of those made for Nicholas Poussin to work from, for a painting he was doing at the time .
This is not dissimilar to my attempts to make drawings of the puppets – Mr Turnip and Colonel Beetroot for my current painting ‘Forged In Light’.
To have lit the models and the copes they were wearing, was enormously helpful, as it would have been for Poussin. Though he wouldn’t have had the benefit of electric light .
You can see the models on my latest Instagram and Facebook posts
