Teacher Ted’s tale brings call to rally via U.S.

American organisers of a vintage car rally have invited a Cambridge teacher to attend a get together of Morris Minors – after a copy of the News found its way across the Atlantic.

Ted Coney, head of art and design at Hills Road Sixth Form College, was featured in the News because he was planning to offer his students trips around the quad in his 70-year-old Morris Minor to raise cash for a conservatory.

The article made its way to Michigan and Mr Coney was invited to the Inaugural Rally of Vintage Minors in August.

He won’t have to drive his pride and joy far.

Mr Coney said: “Luckily it is starting in Barrington, otherwise I don’t think I would make it.”

The Morris Minor has been taking Mr Coney to and from school for the last 30 years.

On Friday students paid £1 a go to take a trip in the classic car and the cash will be used to pay for a new conservatory designed by students for the Art and Design Centre’s garden.

So far £10,000 has been raised, but an extra £5,000 is needed to complete the conservatory – which will be used as study centre for both day and evening students.

Mr Coney said Interior and Garden Design students would be able to use the conservatory for practical sessions, art students would be able to paint exotic plants which grow there and lunch time concerts could take place there.
