Pedal power raises hundreds for Magpas

A schoolboy and a pensioner have raised hundreds of pounds for a charity by completing a 10-mile cycle ride.

Six-year-old Xander Brown, from Ely, and local artist Ted Coney, 70, had signed up for the Ouse Washes Experience charity cycle ride and run on Sunday, April 6.

However, as previously reported, the inaugural event, which would have been raising funds for the emergency medical charity Magpas, had to be postponed due to the condition of the route following recent rain.

But that didn’t stop Xander, a pupil at Ely St John Primary School, and Ted using their pedal power to support Magpas as they decided to complete their own cycle ride.

Joined by Xander’s mum, Michelle, and friends Sylvia and Colin Morton, they biked 10 miles from Ely to Littleport and back, with Ted on his 1940s boke, which he rides every day around Ely.

The halfway stop was at the Harley Davidson memorial in Littleport, where the Fenlanders Chapter of the Harley Davidson Owners Group provided Xander with a surprise reception.

Xander and Ted raised more than £400.

The Ely Hereward Rotary Club hopes to hold the charity event later in the year.
