Old Minor’s Major Day Out
On July 18th 2001, Ted Coney’s Morris Minor was 70 years old. It was also the end of the 30th year that the car has been bringing Ted to Hills Road Sixth Form College.
To mark the event, the Principal presented the car with a pair of genuine 1930s silver wings for its radiator cap. This was something Ted has been looking for, for a long time!
Ten years ago, on the car’s 60th birthday, it was used to give rides around the quad to raise money for the College darkroom. Subsequently £2,500 was raised and the story even appeared in the Times newspaper. Under the headline “Old Minor still playing a major role” it was placed next to a story about Margaret Thatcher and John Major!
This time around, Ted Coney offered rides around the quad to launch an appeal to raise the last £5,000 for the Art Conservatory. £10,000 has already been raised for this project and the conservatory will be used as a flexible space for various groups.
Ted hopes to continue driving his Morris to college, though he continues to arrive early, so that he doesn’t block the traffic!
