Letter: Perplexed to read about crematorium plan
I was interested and perplexed to read your lead article last week (‘District Council backs £12.9m crematorium plan despite claims it is a waste of money’). Of course, we all need somewhere to bury our dead but it did seem a bit ironic coming so soon after the East Cambridgeshire District Council refused to save help the Babylon Gallery at a fraction of the cost.
Over its 30 years existence, Babylon Arts has done enormous good for the visual arts, in making it accessible to all makers and viewers across Ely and beyond.
At a time when it is generally recognised that the Arts supports the wellbeing of a large proportion of the population, it does seem a pity that East Cambridgeshire District Council chose to shoft the responsibility onto Ely City Council, with no financial backing.
Let’s hope the Ely City Council can take the lead on a new plan to bring a gallery back to Ely, possibly in the Maltings Cottages?
