Joy!

I visited Colchester Castle Museum in the summer to see an exhibition organised by the Joy Laurey Archive, entitled ‘The Joy of Puppetry’. The show was to mark what would have been, Joy Laurey’s 100th birthday and the location was near where she lived and worked for many years, in Tiptree.

I knew Joy over a fifteen year period and she was very helpful to me when I wanted to use her puppet ‘Mr Turnip’ in two of my paintings about childhood. Mr Turnip was a popular T.V. character on a programme called Whirligig when I was growing up in the 1950s.

You can see one of the display cabinets from the exhibition and the two paintings which were inspired by Mr Turnip on my latest Facebook and Instagram posts.
