Artist’s donation to raise cash for gallery

There is a rare chance to buy a piece of work by an Ely artist.

Ted Coney is donating a painting titled An Extra Snow Angel for an auction at The Maltings on Sunday, November 22, to raise money for the Babylon Gallery.

The former head of art at Hills Road Sixth Form College, Cambridge, is producing a series of 15 canvases called Snow Angels and No Angels.

Each canvas represents a female family member, but also follows the story of Queen Eleanor of Castile, who died in 1290. Mr Coney traced the 200-mile journey from Harby, Lincolnshire, to her burial site in Westminster Abbey on his bicycle, recording each place her body rested.

He said: “Whereas Edward I commemorated his wife by having a cross built at every site, I am celebrating 15 members of my family by making a painting about them.”
