Artist draws inspiration from family life

A new art attraction inspired by family life has opened near Ely’s popular riverside marina.

Ted Coney’s Family Portraits, on Waterside, will be open every Sunday afternoon from 2pm to 4pm.

Visitors will be taken on a half-hour guided tour by Mr Coney around the 300-year-old home, where he lives with his wife Hazel, to see some of his paintings and the archive material which inspired them.

All the paintings, completed over the last 40 years, are about family life and relationships and are split into eight themed tours.

Mr Coney, 65, said: “It’s a cross between a gallery, a museum and an open studio.”

The former head of art and design at Cambridge’s Hills Road Sixth Form College will show visitors his latest work in progress.
